Fogelberg – Being the only single season player that is not a life-timer carries a lot of pressure and responsibility. Jimmy Foxx, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane, and Ralph Kiner have a heavy load to carry as they prepare to anchor their prospective lineups during the Holiday Baseball League.
Many of the statistically best players of all time have crumbled under the pressure of trying to be the offensive catalyst for a lineup. Sometimes this creates a love/hate relationship with fans. “A guy has to have that special something. They have to have MOJO to go up there and get the job done every time,” Joe Gordon said during the HBL draft broadcast. “Look at the all-time leaders. Who is leading in almost every major category? The lifetime players. The ‘big-time’ single-season guys are supposed to kick-butt every season and the fans get real excited to have them, but they are seldom the guys who do the ACTUAL heavy-lifting in the lineup. People forget that this is a team game and that you have to have stable players throughout your lineup.”
