Merrimack – A lifetime dream came true Saturday afternoon when Ryne Sandberg was named manager of the Merrimack Owls. After months of interviews and speculation, Sandberg became an obvious choice when he was passed over by the Chicago Cubs.
“We could not be happier that Ryne has agreed to be the new player/manager of the Merrimack Owls,” Lifetime Player Ron Santo said after the announcement. “He is 100% class and a true winner.”
The announcement was met with jubilation in Merrimack as fans streamed into Brisson field for fan fest. Banners stating “The Slugging Manager” were hung on either side of the press room interview table, surrounded by the obligatory bunting.
“This was the job that I wanted from day one,” Sandberg said. “I can’t imagine a more perfect fit for me, my family and for the entire Merrimack family.”
Sandberg’s resume, albeit short, is nonetheless impressive. As interim manager for the Southport Sparrows, he led a team of all-stars to a 40 run outburst, the most runs ever scored in a single game in ASB history.
The true test of Sandberg’s managerial skills will be on the line as soon as Wednesday, as the Owls meet the Westport Fleas at Brisson Field.
