Merrimack – Lou Whitaker, George Brett and the Boggstown Boilers offense again looked steady last night as they destroyed the Merrimack Owls in three of four games in inter league play in the Kansas City Baseball Quadrangular. Placing themselves and National League counterpart Westport Fleas in prime position to make the playoffs, the Boilers took three of four in a series for the second time in the season.
“No doubt they are the class of this league. Their offense was solid from 1-9 tonight and at times it seemed that we were just completely outmatched,” Owls manager Ryne Sandberg said after the games.
A late rally in game four gave the Owls a change at a series split, but solid pitching in the 9th and some late game heroics from 9th hitter Cal RIpken Jr. swung the pendulum back in favor of Boggstown.
The American League finishes up their portion of the season next week as the Fogelberg Falcons face a must-sweep position against the Boilers to win the AL… It seems that the true race might be between the Flacons and the Owls to see who gets the final playoff spot.
