Boggstown – In a night that runs were easy to come by and pitchers seemed to come in and out like a rotating pie display at Momma’s Diner, The Fogelberg Falcons outlasted the Boggstown Boilers to possibly save their season. The series win places the Falcons at 2-4 with six games to play against their AL rival, The Joplin Crawdads.
Game one was a matchup of aces gone wrong at Johnny Podres and Robin Roberts got blustered in the first 3 innings giving up 13 and 11 runs respectively. The top four hitters in the Boilers lineup reached base 23 times in the game as John McGraw set a new record for most walks in a game with 6.
The offense cooled in game 2 as Falcons starter Greg Maddux allowed only 6 runs in 6 innings and Falcons relievers Bob Turley and Lee Smith allowed 2 in the next three innings to lock in a 12-8 Falcons victory.
The rubber game proved to be another shootout. Falcons starter Andy Messersmith allowed 11 runs in 5 innings but left with a 1 run advantage and a chance to record the victory.
After falling behind by 2 runs in the 6th, the Falcons stormed back in the 7th by scoring 7 runs on a grand slam from Chipper Jones, a solo shot from lifetimer Carlton Fisk, and a two-run homer from Harmon Killebrew.
“Well… we came out of our offensive slums tonight and I think showed the league that we can do some scoring,” hitting coach Don Mattingly said after the game. “We have a lot of work to do against the Dads’, but we definitely feel a lot better about our team after tonight’s games.”
