Westport – The Merrimack Owls are set to take on the Boggstown Boilers after edging out the Westport Fleas in the first round of the KCQL playoffs.
Requiring all five games, the Owls, led by Dale Murphy and Frank Thomas accomplished something that they have not done all season, win a series outright.
“We did just enough to slip by tonight,” Owls manager Ryne Sandberg said during post-game. “Murph has taken a lot of gruff in the media the last few years, but tonight he showed that he is the leader of this club… Just a lot of guts.”
With the championship series less than a week away, Owls staff ace Catfish Hunter was less than impressive in his two starts of the series. Hampered by a blister on his throwing hand, Hunter was check out by team physicians and given a green light to start game one against the AL champs.
“I’ll be fine,” Hunter said via telephone.
He will need to be more than fine against the offensive onslaught of Boggstown.
