McKeon Tirade Sparks Boilers

Fogelberg – If Jack McKeon’s post game press conference after Game 2 was any indication of what he delivered to his squad after the game, then it will be interesting to see what’s left of the visitors’ locker room in Macintosh Stadium.  McKeon has never been one to pussyfoot around a situation, and he sure didn’t start Friday night after the Boilers blew a big lead in the 9th by committing two errors and allowing 10 unearned runs, spoiling a brilliant performance by veteran Charlie Hough.

“This is a ****ing God**** joke.  These guys are have to be ****ing kidding me.  Seriously, is this some ****ing prank that Zim put them up to?!”  McKeon then singled out beat columnist Tim Baffa for laughing at the comment.  “I’m glad you find it funny, I really do.  It’s not your ass on the line out there every night.  You clearly don’t give a sh*t how the world perceives yourself, but I sure as **** do! You think I wanted these ass***** on my squad?!  I told them there’s one reason and one reason only they were in this draft, and that’s because they stink.  I mean, they really stink.  15 unearned runs in two games!  Charlie threw his ass off tonight and didn’t get sh*t for it.  He’s a winner, he’s shown that.  He’s proven to me he can be a Boiler, these other clowns haven’t.  And until they do, they better cover their a**es, because nobody is safe right now.  Go write your sh***y story about whatever it is you ****ing write about, but I’ve got to go find some guys that want to play baseball.  If I have to play with two outfielders and three infielders, then I will.   ****.”

McKeon’s message, vulgar by some standards, was apparently received by his team.  The defending champion Boilers responded in the rubber match with a flawless game defensively, outscoring the Falcons 12-6.  Paul Splitorff spelled Jim Rooker in the 6th and went the final four innings without giving up a run to earn the win.  McKeon skipped the post-game presser and had the team on the bus back to Boggstown immediately following Game 3.

McKeon’s post game antics overshadowed one of the major headlines going into the series, a marquee matchup in Game 1 between Robin Roberts and Johnny Podres.  It was a pitcher’s duel all the way, but Roberts got the better of Podres, only allowing 3 earned runs in 8 innings to get the win.  Jack Banta came on in the ninth to pick up the save.
