Jenks WildcatsJoe MedwickForgelberg – In todays profile we visit the mountain town of Jenks, where the Wildcats have ruled since 2003. Every year a quiet, laid-back town at the foot of the Rocky Mountains explodes with baseball fever when their Wildcats take the field.

One of the original franchises and owners of 2 titles, the Cats have experience and a tenacity that few other franchises possess. It is not uncommon for a Wildcats pitcher to breeze a batter off the plate with a fastball toward the head, or a Wildcats baserunner to plant a spike in an unsuspecting second basemen.

With the fifth pick in this years Classic, the Cats will have their pick of either a home run bopper like Frank Thomas, Jack Clark, and Carlos Delgado or a super rabbit like Ty Cobb, Billy Hamilton, Wade Boggs and Joe Morgan.

Manager Joe ‘Ducky’ Medwick is known for drafting teams with high power numbers and massive walks. His lifetime player, Mike Schmidt embodies this philosophy with massive home run power and an ability to work the count. Look for the Cats to stick to more of a balanced attack that leans more toward power to compliment Schmidt in this Classic. This approach could lead them to newcomer Roy Cullenbine.

Fogelberg – The Lincoln Square Devil Dogs are the featured team in today’s 8 teams in 8 days.

Manager Lee Elia’s Lincoln Square Devil Dogs squad has been a favorite of ASB Classic fans since their introduction in 2008 when they earned a third place finish in the inaugural Classic. With a hands-on, politically in-correct approach, Elia’s antics have often been shocking, comical, inappropriate for children, and on occasion, masterful.

Terry Steinbach“Lee Elia and (Carlos) Zambrano are not afraid to get after each other,” said ASB Classic analysts Terry Steinbach. “I will never forget the time he pulled Zambrano’s pants down in front of the entire crowd and spanked him for a TERRIBLE pitching performance… The funny part is that Big Z’s next start was the best of his career! You can say what you want about Lee’s methods, but they work for a certain type of player!”

This years Devil Dogs are in a very nice position to draft a QUALITY single season player with their #4 overall position. The additions of John McGraw, Bill Joyce, and Roy Cullenbine to the draft along with players such as Frank Thomas, Ty Cobb, Billy Hamilton, Jack Clark and Rogers Hornsby give the Dogs plenty of options to build a team around.

Their draft position also gives them trade options. Could they trade the position to lock in a better career player draft position? Could they trade it for a “weekend beer bitch”? A bottle of OK Joe’s BBQ sauce? All of the above or anything else their heart desires… You bet the Jenks Wildcats and McCall Mudhens will be knocking on their door.

Ernie BanksOne other constant for Elia is the changing of Franchise players. Having eaten up Ron Santo and Aramis Ramirez in the first two Classics, former Chicago Cubs Shortstop Ernie Banks will get the nod this year. Having performed admirably on both Dogs’ squads, Banks seems like a perfect fit at a thin position. He also might help to lighten the mood around the clubhouse.

Boggstown Boilers

Fogelberg – We continue our tour around the league today with the Boggstown Boilers.

A proud franchise, the Boilers won the first ever All-Star Baseball Classic in 2008 with a potent lineup that featured Max Bishop, Billy Hamilton, Babe Ruth and George Brett. With experience, luck and (possibly the most important thing) the third pick of the single season players, the Boilers are hungry to be the first franchise to win two ASB Classics.

Lifetime player George Brett has done nothing but produce BIG since joining the Boilers in 2007. Amassing more hits in a 12 game season than any other player and being in the top 8 in 5 other offensive categories, Brett has proved that he is one of the most reliable offensive threats in the league. An ideal fit in the third or fourth slot in the lineup, Brett will most likely be the protection for whatever single season player is chosen.

Earlier in the year it looked set in stone that the Boilers would draft Mickey Mantle with their #3 overall pick, but the additions of John McGraw, Bill Joyce, and Roy Cullenbine to the draft along with the UNBELIEVABLE play of Ty Cobb in the Holiday Baseball League, the decision has become a bit more complex for Jack McKeon.

Joe Gordon“I have never seen a player absolutely BLOW UP the way Ty Cobb did in the Holiday League,” Joe Gordon said Monday. “McKeon and Cobb had a really special relationship and I am not sure that either one of them wanted it to be done. He was a great fit with Brett and The Classic is so much about getting people on base… when I talked with another unnamed source within the organization, word was that John McGraw was going to be the selection… Right now your guess is as good as mine!”

“If anyone other than Mantle is chosen, this is going to become a VERY interesting draft! I could see the Wildcats trying to work a trade with the Devil Dogs to lock in Mantle if he slips from that third spot.”

With a high draft pick, quality pitching, an experienced manager and a winning tradition, the Boilers will be an early favorite to win the All-Star Baseball Classic 2010 no matter who they land in the single season player draft.

8 Teams in 8 Days: The Aginville Sketchers

Manager:

Dick Howser

Franchise Player:

Dale Murphy

Previous Draft Choices:

– Mickey Mantle
– Arky Vaughn

Possible Draft Choices:

– Ted Williams
– Babe Ruth
– John McGraw

Fogelberg – We continue our tour of 8 teams in 8 days with the Aginville Sketchers.

The Sketchers, who hold the second draft pick of the Single Season players look to improve on a feast of famine approach that earned them a second to the last place finish in last years Classic. This years version of the Sketchers is bound to improve with names like Babe Ruth, John McGraw, and Ted Williams being linked to them as possible selections.

Manager Dick Howser has a noticeable love for turn of the century and early 1900’s players with past draft selections of John McGraw, Arky Vaughn and Kiki Cuyler among others. All signs are pointing to Howser making a hard play for Babe Ruth this time around after passing him up (and watching him lead the Boilers to a title) in the first All-Star Baseball Classic.

If the Sketchers do land Ruth, look for them to stick to the 08′ Boilers blueprint of stacking rabbits in the first two slots of the lineup in front of him and franchise player Dale Murphy in the middle of the lineup. Without a doubt the Sketchers will be scouting second basemen and the outfield heavily to find players to get on base in front of the possible dynamic duo.

Scoring runs has historically not been a problem for Aginville as they scored 16 and 17 runs in their two games last year on Sunday. A major problem has been pitching and defense as the allowed 37 runs in two games last year.

Joe Gordon“Looking at last years team, I am not sure what they could do differently in the draft,” ASB analysts Joe Gordon said via telephone Monday. “Howser better get his guys throwing the ball better… Their pitching was simply ATROCIOUS last year. I know that they have made changes to the staff every year hoping to find the right combo of guys, but they better find it quickly because this is THE YEAR to win it for them I think.”

Bamford Bears

Fogelberg – Today we start our tour around the league as we profile one team each day for the next 8 days.

We start our tour in the city of Bamford where the Bears hold a decisive advantage in this years Classic with the number one overall pick in the Single Season player draft. Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantle will be at their disposal along with a fertile crop of newcomers in John McGraw, Max Bishop and Roy Columbine. If the Bears fail this year, it will not be due to the lack of a SERIOUS threat in their lineup.

The Bears have improved their scouting department and draft philosophy throughout the year by participating in the I-70 Baseball Classic (3rd place finish) and now look to become a serious threat in the ASB Classic. With at least one juggernaut in their lineup, Bamford will need to decide weather to build around power-hitting, on-base, or a balanced attack. In a limited number of games, all signs point to Player/Manager Pete Rose gambling on a balanced attack as he anchors the 1 or 2 spot in the lineup in front of either Williams or Ruth.

A lack of key hitting on Sundays has left Bamford in the bottom 2 finishers in the first 2 Classics. The franchise has a history of finishing well on Saturday and falling flat on Sunday. If this trend continues, look for public outcry to remove Rose as manager.

Ryne SandbergPete Rose“You know, I think they are not too far away from being a BIG factor in the Classic,” Merrimack Owls lifetime player Ryne Sandberg said Tuesday. “They were REALLY tough in the I-70 and I think their scouting department has figured out how to draft a solid team.”

“They have a HUGE block to build around and I think that Rose is going to have them playing with a fire this year. Whenever you talk to him you can see that he wants it REALLY BAD, and he thinks this is his year… I think he might be right!”

Stadium Tour: Macintosh Stadium @ Fogelberg

Fun Fact

All Star Baseball has been honored as one of the fifty most influential American board games of all time. This version of the game was released in 1955.

All-Star Baseball ClassicFogelberg – Macintosh Stadium, or ‘The Mac’ is the final stop on our tour of fields that will be used in The All-Star Baseball Classic. Home to The Fogelberg Falcons, The Mac was designed by Cadaco in 1955 and was the stadium that my father played the game with my Uncle and I played with my Brother. Ryan and I started playing religiously on this stadium ten years ago when the Fogelberg Falcons and McCall Mudhens were developed.

I have added a bit of “flair” through the years to nerd it up a bit, but the basic structure of the stadium is the Cadaco design. Added features include a “Macintosh Stadium” centerpiece, a championship banner holder, lifetime player bunting, and a statue of lifetime player Don Mattingly beyond the center field wall.

A tradition of the Classic has been developed to use this stadium in the Championship rounds on Tournament Sunday. It is only fitting that the birthplace of the modern age host the Championship every year.

Good luck in your quest to “Make it to The Mac” on Sunday!

All-Star Baseball ClassicFogelberg – We continue our look at the stadiums that will be used in the 2010 All-Star Baseball Classic today as we visit McCall Memorial Stadium, home of The McCall Mudhens.

After several months of design and construction, renovations at McCall Memorial Stadium (commonly referred to as “The Fish Bowl”) are complete. Pool 2 will find McCall Memorial is a state of the art playing envoronment with “new-style” spinners, new scoreboard, playing surface, larger bathrooms, more concessions stands, double the parking and a new children’s area called “The Minnow’s Tank”… It was important to the ownership group in McCall that the stadium look similar to the original stadium with an updated twist.

The home spinner provided one of the most prolific Home Run seasons of all time in it’s first season, as the Mudhens from The Holiday Baseball League 2009, powered out 37 home runs in 12 games as a team (6 home games)… It is yet to be seen weather McCall Memorial is the Coors Field of ASB, but early indications have shown that this is NOT a pitchers park.

All-Star Baseball ClassicFogelberg – In the old days of war, the winning army pretty much got to loot the countryside and take what they wanted–wealth, harvest, women, whatever… Those would be the spoils of victory. As the Champions of last years All-Star Baseball Classic, the Fogelberg Falcons have many decisions to make including the Banquet Dinner Menu, what team will play in which pool, and what cities (stadiums) will host Saturday’s pool play competition (just to name a few).

Over the next few days we will look at the stadiums that will host Pool 1, Pool 2 and the Championship Round on Sunday afternoon.

Again this year the home of the Merrimack Owls, Brisson Field (designed and built by me), will host pool play on Saturday and two rounds of play on Sunday. To the naked eye, Brisson field looks identical to the version that hosted last year, but new, state-of-the-art spinners have been added to assure ease of spin. These “new-style” spinners are quickly becoming the rage of ASB, with all of the benefits of the plastic spinner and the reliability of the 1950’s style cut out spinner in one easy-to-use, easy-to-spin and truly random spinner.

Pool 1 will find that Brisson Field is a state of the art nerd-baseball complex complete with inning, outs and score dials.

Is the Mustache an ASB Rabbits Foot?

Mustache RidesFogelberg – Last years All-Star Baseball Classic in Boggstown provided many firsts, but a seemingly insignificant fashion statement may become an ASB Classic staple. The mustache, which can be dated back as far as 300 BC, may be gaining traction in the ASB world as a sign of good luck on the spinners. All three top finishers from last years Classic sported the stache’ for the weekend leaving clean shaven upper lips out of the metal ceremony.

“It’s pretty sweet!,” Ryan McCall of the McCall Mudhens said with a grin as he grabbed his beer at last years Classic. Without knowing it, McCall would later ride that mustache to a third place finish in the Classic. “I think he ACTUALLY looks pretty AWESOME!,” Jamie McCall added later that evening.

Just this week the defending Champion Fogelberg Falcons have placed a mandatory mustache rule on all personnel at Macintosh Stadium. All vendors, field crew and team staff will be required to sport the facial hair. “We had some pretty good luck last year with our handle-bar staches’, so we figured that it would be a fun thing for the fans, the players and the city to embrace during the Classic,” Falcons manager Don Zimmer said Monday night with peach fuzz growing on his upper lip.

The only question is how many players will show up with the stache’ for this years Classic. Early mustache confirmation came from representatives of the Falcons, Beanbags, Mudhens and Boilers… Are the Bears, Wildcats, Sketchers and Devil Dogs man enough to give free mustache rides during the Classic? WE’LL SEE IN 44 SHORT DAYS!
