McKeon Shuns HBL Awards

Boggstown Boilers

Boggstown – Among all the hoopla surrounding the presentation of the postseason HBL awards Wednesday night, there was one thing missing…the Boggstown Boilers.  Despite the fact that the Boilers were the most featured team in the awards, they showed their appreciation (or lack thereof) to the league and the media by staying home and practicing.

Jack McKeon“We’re baseball players.  We’re not show ponies trying to win ribbons at the county fair.  We have an HBL banner to defend, that’s all we care about right now”, explained McKeon.  In all, 9 individual awards were given out to Boiler players, including the MVP, Frisch, Cy Young, and 6 silver sluggers. The manager’s attitude has apparently been embraced by the players as well, who responded well to maintaining their practice schedule in lieu of attending the awards.  “Really, our team just isn’t made up of guys that get into that stuff,” said Charlie Hough, winner of his first ever Cy Young award.  “Robin and George have set the standard around here.  They’ve both won lots of awards, but neither one makes a big deal about it or celebrates it.  They’ve drilled it into all of us that we will work harder than anyone else and winning games is the only real reward we look for.”

That mentality was especially prevalent in the second half of the season, when the Boilers broke a fist place tie with the Fogelberg Falcons to win their last six games of the season.  “If there was a turning point in our season, that was it,” according to Boiler lifetimer Amos Otis.  “We were 4-2, tied for 1st place, feeling pretty fine about our situation.  Then Coach McKeon laid into us.  He said we were better than this, we’d let a few games get away with errors and bad pitching, and we got lucky in a few close games.  He said, ‘We have six games left.  Let’s just go out there and let our nuts hang, boys.  Let’s wrap this thing up, then we can get an extra week of practice and go balls out for the playoffs.’  That really set a fire under us and we’ve been going all out since then.”

“Our record is 0-0, as far as I’m concerned,” said McKeon.  “That sure as hell isn’t going to win us anything.  We’re going to be facing a team that will be fresh off a series victory, so they’re going to be as confident as anybody.  I want our boys to be just as hungry as any team out there.  We’re working hard, that’s all I can tell you.”

Perhaps if the league ever hands out a Manager of the Year trophy, McKeon will change his mind about awards.  Unless that trophy is in the form of a Cuban cigar, however, it’s highly unlikely that McKeon will ever bend his resolve.

Falcons Battle Crawdads Tonight In Fogelberg

Tonights Game @ Macintosh Stadium:: American League

Fogelberg Falcons

VS.

Joplin Crawdads

X

Holiday Baseball ClassicFogelberg – Two teams searching for an identity will meet tonight at Macintosh Stadium as the Joplin Crawdads come calling on the Fogelberg Falcons in three seemingly meaningless games to complete the regular season of the Holiday Baseball Classic.

The 4-5 Falcons, after posting a promising start to the season are reeling after a three game sweep at the hands of the first place Boggstown Boilers.

Looking desperately for some kind of consistent offense, Falcons manager Don Zimmer has pointed the finger at Jimmy Foxx to lead the way. “We have built the entire offense around Jimmy and quite frankly he has not delivered the way we think he can. We’ve asked what will make him more comfortable and have made a few changes,” Zimmer said from his office at The Mac. “He wanted to hit cleanup so we’re gonna give him a try there.”

The 1-8 Crawdads have struggled since winning their first game of the season and have dropped 8 straight decisions. Finding some consistent offense will be on their agenda as well. The Dads’ have scored more than 10 runs only one time during the loosing streak and have scored 5 or less two times. New manager Darrell Porter will look to Rogers Hornsby and Alan Trammell to pick up the pace offensively and for Charlie Liebrandt to continue his steady pitching.

This will be the beginning of a long series of games between these two teams as they will meet again in the first round of the American League playoffs.

Euphoria in Joplin for Manager Porter

Joplin – After announcing local hero and Joplin legend Darrell Porter was to become the new manager of the Crawdads, local call-in shows were slammed with excitement, local merchandise stores instantly sold out of #15 Crawdads jersey’s and a new hope for a 1-8 team began to erupt from the volcanic ashes of a near-wasted season.

The ever humble Porter was visibly emotional at the announcement of his lifelong dream. His voice began to shake a bit as he accepted the position and quickly settled into a strong, no nonsense tone while speaking of how to fix this team and his plans for the future.

It is hard to tell what kind of teams the Porter era will bring to Joplin, but if his playing style brings any clue, the Dads’ will become more on-base driven, less reliant on the home run to score and the players that will be drafted will be tough-as-nails.

Taking over from Tony Larussa disciple Dave Duncan, Porter will undoubtedly bring the team in a new direction as he takes over as player/manager for the remainder of the season before settling into the manager only role for the KCBL 2010.

“I could not be happier for the fans of Joplin,” Falcons Manager Don Zimmer said. “For those of us that have been in this game for a long time, it’s nice to see a first-class guy like him go home and get a shot… He’s been through a lot and seen a lot of stuff that you can’t learn in a text book. He pulled himself up by the boot straps and got himself to a great place. His players are going to respond to that… On a personal note, I’m not happy that we have to play them 6 times every season! ”

If excitement for a new manager earns any wins for the Crawdads, then they should go undefeated for the rest of the season.

Hartnett to be benched?
One of the first questions that might be asked of the new player/manager of the Dads’ is weather he will bench Duncan favorite Gabby Hartnett in favor of himself. The ineffective Hartnett has stumbled to a .278 on-base percentage in 16 at-bats this season and is struggling with only 3 hits for the season.

Porter has matched the Hartnett hits total in only 9 at-bats this season while compiling a .333 OBP and doubling his total bases. If making a change is the new managers state of mind, he might want to start by writing his own name in the lineup card.

Mudhens Win NL With Owls losses

Holiday Baseball ClassicWestport – The Merrimack Owls failed to capture the one victory that they needed to win the NL of the Holiday Baseball League Friday night as they dropped three heart-wrenching games to the underdog Fleas at Westport. In the disappointing conclusion to their regular season, the Owls stranded 36 runners and failed to get the timely hitting they needed to pull ahead while allowing countless home runs to their opponents.

The Fleas proved to the the Mudhens best friend throughout the regular season as they handed the Hens’ 5 victory’s in head-to-head contests, while beating the Owls 4 times and playing the ultimate spoiler to the Owls regular season.

In a season that might have been remembered for it’s stellar pitching, this regular season will be remembered for the two outs that the Owls pitchers could not retire. In two pivotal games, against two different opponents, the Owls pitchers allowed a two out, pinch hit grand-slam that decided the game and handed them the loss and the loss of the NL title.

Mickey Cochrane, after a steady season, was completely shut down against the Fleas pitching staff, getting 3 hits in 17 at-bats and single handedly stranding 14 runners and derailing several potential rally innings.

The Owls will now face the Westport Fleas in the first round of the playoffs. Vegas odds makers have the Fleas winning the series in 5 games.
