I-70 Classic Round Robin Results

Bamford Sweeps Round Robin
McCall – The Bamford Bears took care of business in the round robin portion of the I-70 Baseball classic last night going undefeated in their three games and locking in the first seed in the first round of the playoffs to be held next week. The Bears will take on the McCall Mudhens who went winless for the evening and will also hold home field advantage throughout the tourney.

The Merrimack Owls and their two wins place them in the 2 seed and will match up against the Westport Fleas who earned the three seed. “That’s a real tough draw for a first round opponent. They played real good tonight and I am sure that Buck (O’Neill) will have them playing even better with an extra week of practice,” Owls manager Ed Bailey said during the post game interviews.

Each playoff series will be a best of three games and the winners will advance to the Championship round and play another best of three set to determine who gets the banner.

The I-70 Baseball Classic Gets Underway at McCall

The first annual I-70 Baseball Classic gets underway tonight at McCall Memorial Stadium. The teams have arrived, the lineups have been made and the players are ready. A street festival in downtown McCall is currently taking place with a lavish opening ceremony planned planned for later this evening. It is truly a circus atmosphere in McCall as the town celebrates hosting this monumental event. Performances from Boston, ELO and The Click Five with Led Zeppelin performing the National Anthem are planned before first pitch with the town founder, Woody McCall, throwing out the first pitch.

McCall has pulled out all the stops for the first ever games played at the newly renovated field. After extensive negotiations the owners have brought in world-famous rice-crispy-treat maker Emily Hagen and her team of assistant chefs that included Maggie Hagen and Chloe Hagen. “I sure hope they can sneak a few of those into the dugout for us,” Ryne Sandberg of the Merrimack Owls said while en route to the stadium via cell phone. “They better make sure that the fans do not get to drunk to enjoy the food!”

“I made the choc chip rice krispies and they look weird..have you made them before?” Chef Hagen posted on Facebook earlier this morning.

Play begins with the McCall Mudhens facing the Merrimack Owls in McCall and the Westport Fleas taking on the Bamford Bears.

Watched part of Bull Durham last night ::

“Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astro-turf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”

Bamford Bears join I-70 Classic 2009

The Bamford Bears have officially entered the I-70 Baseball Classic! The first event for the Bears since the All-Star Baseball Classic (last February) promises to be a first class event filled with top-notch rivalry’s and an even playing field! The newly added I-70 Classic is the newest official “major” of the ASB season and the third event of 2009!

“I could not be happier!” Ron Santo said after taking batting practice at Brisson Field in Merrimack. “I have not seen very much of the Bears, but I do know that Pete Rose (the Bamford team captain) is a heck of a competitor that plays the game with everything he’s got… Heck, the guy can play just about anywhere on the field and we all know he can hit!”

Participating Teams:
McCall Mudhens (Ryan)
Merrimack Owls (Joe)
Westport Fleas (Matt)
Bamford Bears (Jeff)

All I-70 Classic games will be hosted by the newly renovated McCall Memorial Field in McCall. (a tour and pictures of the new field later this week)

The Renovated McCall Memorial

After several months of design and construction, renovations at McCall Memorial Stadium (commonly referred to as “The Fish Bowl”) are complete. The updated stadium has a new scoreboard, playing surface, larger bathrooms, more concessions stands, double the parking and a new children’s area called “The Minnow’s Tank”… It was important to the ownership group in McCall that the stadium look similar to the original stadium with an updated twist.

“I took a tour with (Don) Blasingame right after it was completed a few weeks back and it looks pretty darn first class,” Falcons manager Don Zimmer said from his home in Fogelberg. “I think it’s gonna to go a long way towards helping them win a major event over there … Of course you still have to play the games.”

Fogelberg City Parade

FOGELBERG — Fogelberg’s streets will be crowded again with screaming fans celebrating a championship — This time for the biggest title of the all, The All-Star Baseball Classic Championship.

Mayor Mikey Rohr announced plans for a “rolling rally” at 11 a.m. Thursday to celebrate the Falcons win over the Jeetzton Beanbags in the championship. The parade will start at Macintosh Stadium and wind its way through downtown Fogelberg to Jackson Square. The parade will also be broadcast on local television and radio.

Sixteen World War II-era amphibious “duck boats” will carry the Falcons players, owners and staff. The team’s mascot (Timmy the Falcon), former Falcons greats and championship trophies from previous years will ride on two flatbed trucks.

City officials urged the hundreds of thousands of fans expected to attend the parade to use public transportation, with streets around the route closed to traffic beginning at 9:30 a.m.

“I’m happy for the Falcons and the city of Fogelberg,” Don Mattingly said Wednesday. “I know what it means to win a championship as a Falcon and the place championships hold in the history of the franchise. I’m also pleased for Paul Molitor and Don Zimmer, knowing where they were last year and then making the decisions to put them in position to win the title.”

The city has held five other championship parades.

Arrests Follow Championship Game

FOGELBERG — Prosecutors say 10 people have been arraigned on charges stemming from criminal acts during the Fogelberg Falcons’ championship celebrations.

Police arrested 22 people before and after the Falcons won their 6th title Sunday afternoon. Ten suspects were arraigned in Fogelberg Municipal Court on Wednesday, the vast majority for disorderly conduct and public nudity.

Several storefront windows were damaged near Macintosh Stadium after the Falcons’ 14-7 win over the Jeetzton Beanbags in the Championship game of the All-Star Baseball Classic.

Mayor Mikey Rohr called the alleged offenders “punks” and called for tough penalties. “I will have Ferd Miller beat their asses!”

Police increased patrols and used video surveillance at key areas around the city to control rowdiness. Previous Falcons championship celebrations have been marred by deaths among revelers.

All-Star Baseball Classic 2009 Wrap-up

Final Standings:
Champions – Fogelberg Falcons
Runner-up – Jeetzton Beanbags
3rd place – McCall Mudhens

Road to the title:
Game 1
Falcons 19, Sketchers 16
19 runs is the most that The Falcons would put on the board all weekend and it turns out that they would need every one of them against a high scoring Sketchers lineup. Catchers on both teams hit grand slams with Mickey Tettleton earning the game MVP for his big fly in the 7th inning.

Game 2
Falcons 11, Devil Dogs 10
This game begins a daunting series of nail biting games for the Falcons… The Devil Dogs lead 10-5 till the Falcons cut the lead to 1 in the eighth on a series of singles from Wade Boggs, Joe Morgan, Tony Phillips and a double by pinch hitter Johnny Mize. Down by one, Tris Speaker doubles to lead off the ninth. A Walk to Boggs puts runners at first and second. After a double from Morgan ties the game, Tony Phillips hits his second walk off single of the Classic with two outs to give the Falcons a win.

Game 3
Falcons 11, Beanbags 15
The high-powered offense of the Beanbags throws up 9 runs in the eighth inning after scoring only 2 runs in seven innings against Falcons ace Johnny Podres. The Combo at the top of the Bags’ lineup of Rickey Henderson, John McGraw, Dave Winfield and Todd Helton was too much for the Falcons relief staff in the eighth. This would be the second time The Beanbags beat the Falcons in the Classic and earn them a place in the Championship contest.

Game 4
Falcons 14, Mudhens 13
This game between the two oldest franchises will go down as possibly their greatest match-up ever. The Falcons open up an early lead scoring 9 runs through 3 innings. Just when the game looks to be a foregone conclusion the Mudhens answer with 10 runs in the next three innings to outpace the Falcons and tie the game after six complete… The Hens’ then continue their remarkable comeback by taking the lead in the 7th by scoring 2 against Carl Hubbell.

Down by two in the 9th, Falcons manager Don Zimmer gets an instant reward for pinch hitting Lou Boudreau. One of the staples of the Falcons organization, Boudreau hits an unlikely solo home run to cut the lead to one. After a ground out by Paul Molitor, Tris Speaker and Ralph Kiner draw walks to put runners at first and second. A Strikeout by Wade Boggs puts the Mudhens one out away from a birth in the championship game against the Beanbags… Stan Musial is the Falcons last hope and hits the second pitch he sees deep into the outfield where an EXTREMELY unlikely two base error occurs scoring Speaker from second base, tying the score and giving the Falcons new life in extra innings.

In Fogelberg’s half of the ninth, Tony Phillips leads off with a single followed by walks to Tettleton and Salmon to load the bases with one outs. A strikeout of Paul Molitor gives way to back-to-back walks and two runs for the Falcons… The Mudhens cut the lead to one in their half but are unable to push across the tying run.

Game 5: Championship
Falcons 12, Beanbags 10
Coming out of the losers bracket, the Falcons are against the wall and needing to beat the Beanbags twice to win the title. This will be the second straight extra inning nail-biting contest for the eventual champs.

After giving up 5 early runs to the Beanbags, the Falcons chip away at a 10 run deficit through the next nine innings to tie the score in regulation. After neither team could score in the 10th or 11th, the Falcons plate two runs on a homerun from Joe Morgan in the 11th. Warren Spahn, The Falcons closer, came to pitch a scoreless half inning to earn the win.

Game 6: Championship Final Game
Falcons 14, Beanbags 7
Falcons ace Johnny Podres pitches his second game of the day against the Beanbags continuing his strong performance allowing 2 runs over seven and two-thirds innings. The Falcons lineup comes out firing on all four cylinders grabbing 14 runs in the contest and winning the Championship of the All-Star Baseball Classic 2009.

Falcons Lineup:
P. Molitor (1B*)
T. Speaker (CF)
R. Kiner (LF*)
W. Boggs (3B)
S. Musial (RF)
J. Morgan (2B)
T. Phillips (SS)
M. Tettleton (C)
