KCQL Championship set

Westport – The Merrimack Owls are set to take on the Boggstown Boilers after edging out the Westport Fleas in the first round of the KCQL playoffs.

Requiring all five games, the Owls, led by Dale Murphy and Frank Thomas accomplished something that they have not done all season, win a series outright.

“We did just enough to slip by tonight,” Owls manager Ryne Sandberg said during post-game. “Murph has taken a lot of gruff in the media the last few years, but tonight he showed that he is the leader of this club… Just a lot of guts.”

With the championship series less than a week away, Owls staff ace Catfish Hunter was less than impressive in his two starts of the series. Hampered by a blister on his throwing hand, Hunter was check out by team physicians and given a green light to start game one against the AL champs.

“I’ll be fine,” Hunter said via telephone.

He will need to be more than fine against the offensive onslaught of Boggstown.

Fleas squeek by, take 3 of 4

Westport FleasWestport – The Westport Fleas locked in a playoff spot Wednesday by beating their National League counter parts in three out of four games and clinching the National League of the Kansas City Baseball Quad.

“We let two of those games slip through our fingertips,” First year Owls manager Ryne Sandberg said. “I told the guys a few minutes ago that we just need to shut the door on tonight and focus on getting things right in the playoffs.”

Nudging out the Fogelberg Falcons for the final playoff spot, the Owls will be matched again against the Fleas, with the winner of the series playing the Boggstown Boilers for the title.

“We need Garciaparra and Gwynn to carry more weight, Murph needs to keep being the leader of this squad, and the back of the order need to get one clutch hit per game.”

Might be a tall order for a season long group of under-achievers.

Boilers take AL, sweep awards

Boggstown BoilersFogelberg – The Boggstown Boilers repeated a familiar theme Thursday night as they once again won three out of four games and clinched the American League of the Kansas City Baseball Quadralangular. Led by league MVP and all-time ASB great George Brett,  the Boilers breezed through an over matched Fogelberg Falcons club and earned an automatic birth in the Championship series.

“I can sit here and talk about how great Brett is, but honestly, we had a really crappy team,” falcons manager Don Zimmer said. “When you think about all of the fundamentals it takes to win a ball game… We did none of them well this season. Just about every guy in the lineup underperformed, our pitching underperformed, and our defense was atrocious.”

Sweeping every major award in the AL, the Boilers took home the MVP (Brett), Cy Young (Paul Splitorff) and Frisch (Lou Whitaker).

“Seems like Brett wins that thing every season,” Falcons lifetimer Paul Molitor said. “Hell, the Boilers seem to win the league every time. I have a feeling that we are going to see some changes around here… Our fans deserve better than this.”

The KCQL regular season wraps next week when the Merrimack Owls and Westport Fleas square off for NL supremacy and a chance at the Boilers.

Boilers Clip Owls Wings

George Brett Cadaco All-Star Baseball

Boggstown BoilersMerrimack – Lou Whitaker, George Brett and the Boggstown Boilers offense again looked steady last night as they destroyed the Merrimack Owls in three of four games in inter league play in the Kansas City Baseball Quadrangular. Placing themselves and National League counterpart Westport Fleas in prime position to make the playoffs, the Boilers took three of four in a series for the second time in the season.

“No doubt they are the class of this league. Their offense was solid from 1-9 tonight and at times it seemed that we were just completely outmatched,” Owls manager Ryne Sandberg said after the games.

A late rally in game four gave the Owls a change at a series split, but solid pitching in the 9th and some late game heroics from 9th hitter Cal RIpken Jr. swung the pendulum back in favor of Boggstown.

The American League finishes up their portion of the season next week as the Fogelberg Falcons face a must-sweep position against the Boilers to win the AL… It seems that the true race might be between the Flacons and the Owls to see who gets the final playoff spot.

Inter-split

Westport – Energy, or a lack of it seemed present as the Westport Fleas and the Fogelberg Falcons squared off in a rare inter league match-up. Coming off tense meetings with arch rivals in previous weeks, there seemed to be a lack of punch by both teams. Even the public address man Buster Kirby was reported as falling asleep during the third game.

“I did not fall asleep during the game,” Kirby said with red cheeks. “It was a really boring night of ball, but I did not sleep.”

Winning games 1 and 4 of the set, the Falcons staved off virtual elimination from the playoffs and game themselves a shot in the American League.

Inter-league Play Begins Tonight

Fogelberg FalconsFogelberg – The Fogelberg Falcons look to get their season on track tonight against the Westport Fleas as the Kansas City Baseball Quadrangular moves to inter-league play. Posting a 1-3 record against the Boilers in their opening series, the Falcons look homeward to Macintosh Stadium to get their season on track.

“I think this team can do more than what we showed last time out. It starts with me hitting the ball a lot better and a couple of key outs here and there.” Lifetime player Paul Molitor said.

It is safe to say, if the Falcons do not win the series, their season could be as good as over. “Right now, we are the worst team in the league. Sure, this baby (league) feels like it is just getting under way, but after tonight, it will be over half way done… You want to be in control of your own destiny doing into that final week and if we do not win 3 tonight we are going to need some help,” said manager Don Zimmer.
