Falcons win in shootout series with Boilers

Kansas City Baseball LeagueBoggstown – In a night that runs were easy to come by and pitchers seemed to come in and out like a rotating pie display at Momma’s Diner, The Fogelberg Falcons outlasted the Boggstown Boilers to possibly save their season. The series win places the Falcons at 2-4 with six games to play against their AL rival, The Joplin Crawdads.

Game one was a matchup of aces gone wrong at Johnny Podres and Robin Roberts got blustered in the first 3 innings giving up 13 and 11 runs respectively. The top four hitters in the Boilers lineup reached base 23 times in the game as John McGraw set a new record for most walks in a game with 6.

The offense cooled in game 2 as Falcons starter Greg Maddux allowed only 6 runs in 6 innings and Falcons relievers Bob Turley and Lee Smith allowed 2 in the next three innings to lock in a 12-8 Falcons victory.

Chipper JonesThe rubber game proved to be another shootout. Falcons starter Andy Messersmith allowed 11 runs in 5 innings but left with a 1 run advantage and a chance to record the victory.

After falling behind by 2 runs in the 6th, the Falcons stormed back in the 7th by scoring 7 runs on a grand slam from Chipper Jones, a solo shot from lifetimer Carlton Fisk, and a two-run homer from Harmon Killebrew.

“Well… we came out of our offensive slums tonight and I think showed the league that we can do some scoring,” hitting coach Don Mattingly said after the game. “We have a lot of work to do against the Dads’, but we definitely feel a lot better about our team after tonight’s games.”

Foxx Leads The Way For Fleas

Westport FleasKansas City Baseball LeagueMerrimack – After finishing in last place the previous two seasons, Buck O’Neil realized the importance of his Fleas team getting off to a good start in the 2010 KCBL.  On Monday night  in Merrimack, his team accomplished that goal, taking two of three games from the Owls.

The Fleas offense was clicking on all cylinders in a 19-9 Game 1 victory.  O’Neil’s single-season draft selections lived up to expectations as Jackie Robinson and George Selkirk combined to reach base 14 out of 14 plate appearances.  Wade Boggs also contributed by going 5-6 with 5 RBI.

Game 2 belonged to the Owls from the beginning as Warren Spahn effectively shut down the Fleas.  The Owls also got a big boost from Lifetimer Ryne Sandberg as he went 2-3, stole two bases, scored 3 runs, and delivered a game-clinching grand slam late in the game.  The contribution from Sandberg was especially welcome after a disappointing start for Dale Murphy.  Murph struggled in the first game, and was eventually benched in Game 2 after striking out his first three plate appearances.

Jimmy FoxxThe final game of the evening was everything but the rubber match showdown the Merrimack fans had hoped for.  The Fleas got to starter Tom Glavine early and never relented.  Seemingly everyone in the Westport lineup caught fire as the Fleas exploded for a 23-7 victory.  Jimmie Foxx concluded a monster offensive series by reaching base all 7 times, blasting 3 HRs, scoring 6 times, and driving in 10 runs.  Foxx finished the series with 5 home runs and 14 RBI, and led a Fleas attack that thrived on the long ball by leaving the park 10 times.

Buck O’Neil sounded surprisingly reserved after the encouraging offensive performances, “It was a good start.  We won on the road, which is always good.  It’s nice to not have a hole to dig out of like we usually have to.”  When asked to comment on Jimmie Foxx’s massive output, O’Neil simply replied “Jimmie’s good.  I mean, I guess he’s alright for a white guy”, before bursting into laughter.

Boilers Begin Defense of KCBL Title With a Sweep

Boggstown Boilers
Kansas City Baseball LeagueFogelberg – The Boggstown Boilers opened up KCBL play with a 3 game sweep on the road over the Fogelberg Falcons, as Jack McKeon couldn’t have hoped for a better beginning to the season.

In a league that looked like it would yield some of the more potent teams offensively in quite some time, the Boilers were able to muster the wins while averaging a modest 13 runs per game.  McKeon was forced to lean heavily on his bullpen in all three games.  In a combine 10.1 innings, the Boilers’ bullpen only gave up three runs, preserving victories for Robin Roberts and Charlie Hough.  In Game 3, Jim Rooker picked up the win in relief as the Boilers mounted an unlikely rally in the 9th inning, plating a total of 9 runs after facing a 7-3 deficit.

“We were fortunate”, exhaled McKeon through a cloud of cigar smoke.  “We jumped out early the first two games and then just kind of went brain dead.  Their pitchers were great tonight.  We were dead in the water in Game 3.  I didn’t even think a Chilean earthquake could shake us out of that slumber, but for some reason we were finally able to string together some quality at-bats in the 9th.  I feel like Houdini after that escape.”

George BrettThe Boilers got consistent offensive pressure from the top of their lineup.  The 1-4 hitters all boasted an OBP of over .630, while George Brett led the way by gathering 11 hits for a .688 batting average.  “Those guys will level out, but we really need our 5-7 to step it up”, explained McKeon.  “We can’t just sit back and wait for four guys to play out of their ass day in and day out.  Kiner was basically a spectator those three games.  He’s a guy that we really need some production out of if we’re going to keep with the offenses in this league.”

The next American League series features the Boilers hosting the Crawdads, while the National League will open up with the Merrimack Owls visiting the McCall Mudhens.

Jubilation in Jenks!

Jenks Wildcats
All-Star Baseball ClassicFogelberg – Mike Schmidt turned to his wife when he woke up and asked: “Did Sunday really happen?”

The Wildcats and their fans awoke Monday to the realization that Jenks stood alone as All-Star Baseball Classic Champions for the first time in the club’s history after Sunday’s 18-17 triumph over the McCall Mudhens.

“I’m not sure if it’s completely sunk in yet,” Schmidt said at Monday morning’s news conference at the convention center in Fogelberg. “It seems like as the minutes go by, it slowly does.

“Our victory yesterday was the culmination of years of hard work, fighting through a lot of adversity, ups and downs and more importantly than that, representing a city that has been through so much,” Schmidt said.

“We look at it as a responsibility. Our city, our fans, gave us strength and we owe this to them. That’s made all the difference. … There’s no people that you would want to win for more than the city of Jenks. So it’s an honor.”

As Schmidt spoke, coach Joe Medwick sat off to the side, elbows on knees, face buried in his hands. When it was his turn to speak, he leaned on the podium, clutching the ASBCL trophy in his right hand.

Joe Medwick“I am not sure there are words…”

Medwick then smiled and added that he had the trophy in bed with him while he slept early Monday morning.

“You can’t get enough of this,” Medwick said. “Rolled over it a couple times. I probably drooled on it. But man, there’s nothing like it. There’s no people that you would want to win for more than the city of Jenks.”

Medwick said when all was quiet in the team hotel around 3 a.m., he offered a prayer of thanks for his team and his experience in Jenks, where he became a manager for in 2003.

“When I was hired in 03, it became apparent to me that baseball was obviously very important but it was much bigger than just baseball” Medwick said. “The people here are special. The Cats’ add so much to this city.”

Their run to the All-Star Baseball Classic Championship captured the attention of baseball fans everywhere. The Nielsen Co. says the Championship game got its highest overnight ratings in 3 years, meaning there’s a strong likelihood it will be the most-watched ASBCL Championship game when the final numbers are released later Tuesday.

“I keep thinking of the word ‘magical,’ ” analyst Joe Gordon said. “When you think about the relationship between the Wildcats and the city of Jenks.”
