Pitching Lifts Owls past Fleas

Merrimack – The Merrimack Owls kept their pursuit of first place and an automatic birth in the NLCS alive Wednesday night by defeating the Westport Fleas in the last two games of a three game set played at Brisson Field in Merrimack.

Game one was a lopsided affair that went to the Fleas by the score of 19-6, games two and three went to the Owls by the score of 14-2 and 15-7.

The Owls are now tied with the McCall Mudhens for first place in the National League after pushing their record to 4-2 with the wins, and gave themselves a shot at skipping the first round of the playoffs.

“Those were big wins,” Owls Lifetimer Dale Murphy said at his locker after the games. “We came out and got our butts kicked in the first game, but Ed (Bailey) kept us focused and our pitching did the rest.”

With Warren Spahn winning game 2 by throwing a 2 run complete game and Tom Glavine winning game 3 with 6 quality innings and earning his second win of the season.

“Any time you can turn a team from 19 runs scored to 2, it’s a pretty fantastic game,” Murphy said of Spahn. “Our bullpen was hit pretty hard in the first game, so we needed someone to come out and give us some innings… Warren was a real stopper for us tonight.”

Let’s Play Two!

Crawdads To Open HBL In Boggstown

Boggstown – The Joplin Crawdads look to open their portion of the Holiday Baseball League on the right foot tonight in Boggstown against the defending Champion Boilers. The last remaining team in either league to start their season, the Dads’ will have their work cut out for them on the road against a 2-1 Boilers team.

“That Boilers team should be 3-0 right now,” ASB Network commentator Joe Gordon said. “This is going to be a really great night of ball… Looking through the lineup of the Dads’ gives me a bit of deja vu. Morgan, Trammell, Hornsby, Griffey and Greenberg are guys that have been there for this team in the past. Unlike several of the other teams, they seem to have gotten a good amount of the guys that they like to play with. They have proven that if nothing else, there is a HUGE amount of power in that lineup.”

Power indeed. The Crawdads organization has collected 3 of the top 4 Home Run hitting seasons of all-time (35, 35, 29) and with the additions of Hornsby and Greenberg to their already devastating lifetimer duo of Trammell and Griffey they look to be at it again this season.

“There are only 4 slots on that team homer list and they hold 3 of them. That can’t be a fluke… They drop dingers like crazy around there and after watching the Falcons and Boilers a couple of weeks back, I think these Crawdads could really put a dent into the American League,” said Gordon.

High hopes for Duncan
Dads’ manager Dave Duncan has made no secret that he has high expectations for this team. “Yeah, he thinks he has the best team in the league, but I would guess that all of the managers think that,” a close friend of Duncan that wishes to remain unnamed said. “I have watched him fill out that lineup a million times… I have seen him put a million names in those slots, but the only time I see his eyes light up is when he writes the name ‘Hornsby’ in there… With this lineup, how can you not think this is going to be our year?”

Owls Look For First Place, Fleas Look For First Win

Merrimack – Two teams looking for different types of “firsts” take the field tonight in Merrimack as the Owls and the Westport Fleas renew their rivalry at Brisson Field. The Owls will be looking to win at least two games in order to lock in first place in the National League at the half-way point in the season and the Fleas will be looking to win their first game after getting swept by the McCall Mudhens in the opening games of the season.

Owls not looking past Fleas
Looking at the win/loss numbers it would seem that the Owls at 2-1 would be the favored team, but as the numbers start to get deeper, these two teams begin to look closer to an even match. The Fleas have better power numbers with 3 Home-Runs and 12 Doubles compared to 1 and 10, while the Owls own the AVE and OBP categories with .361 and .464 vs .339 and .448.

“I watched the first game of that opening series against the Hens’ and the Fleas looked like they should have won that game. I know that Buck has worked with them on their defense and Brisson Field is pretty flat, so that should help them,” Owls assistant manager and lifetimer Ryne Sandberg said before conditioning practice. “They are going to win some games this season, hopefully we can keep them down for a little while longer, but we are all aware of how good a team they are.”

Hungry Fleas look for victory
The history books tell us that the Westport Fleas need at least 2 victories tonight to have a chance at an automatic birth in the NLCS. No team has ever lost 5 games in the first half of the season and received an automatic birth.

“It is not unheard of to loose your first three games and come back and win the whole stinking thing, but loosing 5 in the first half would be a pretty tough thing to overcome,” baseball expert Joe Gordon said Tuesday. “Truthfully though, in a playoff setup like this, all a team has to do is get on a run and they can hoist the trophy. The Boilers from last season proved that! … The Fleas have time, but they need to start figuring it out soon.”

Brisson Art Gallery Acquires New Work

Merrimack – In a small ceremony held on Friday morning inside Brisson Field in Merrimack, The Brisson Art Gallery unveiled a new piece recently donated by artist Chuck Morgan. Entitled “The Owl”, the contemporary piece will be permanently displayed in the main gallery. Painted in the early 70’s, it has been in Mr. Morgan’s personal collection for over 30 years.

With a pristine composition, the cerebral work flows with thick paint strokes radiating form a focal point and sets a sober tone while commenting on the strength and frailty of life. The viewer either cast themselves as the bird itself, or someone looking at the subject, both orientations evoke raw emotion.

Morgan, a progressive Avant-Garde master, is know for his plush, exocentric lifestyle and quotable personality “I was just going to throw it away… Sure, you can have it.”

The Gallery is thrilled to have the work in it’s possession and will proudly display it for years to come.

Owls Squeeze By Hens’ With 2 Wins

McCall – Local media are calling last nights 3 game set between the Merrimack Owls and the McCall Mudhens “The Great Escape” after the Owls slipped out of McCall with two wins against the Mudhens at McCall Memorial. In three of the closest games this league has seen in a long time, the Owls squeaked out victories in games 2 and 3 after dropping game 1 in extra innings. Two of the games were decided by 1 run and the widest margin of victory came in game 3 when the Owls won by 5 runs on a 4 run 9th inning.

“These two teams are so evenly matched. I have a feeling that both are thinking that they should have swept the series,” ASB analyst Joe Gordon said during post-game. “The Hens’ definitely let one slip away in game 2 with that error, and the Owls had a ton of chances to win that game 1 extra-inning affair… It was really fun to watch these teams go at each-other. The Hens’ have all those power guys who kept pounding home-run after home-run, and the Owls just kept scrapping together rally’s when they needed them… Both teams got some clutch hitting and some nice pitching.”

Game 1: Robinson wins it for Hens’ with triple in 10th
Game one was a hard fought contest as the Owls jumped out to an early lead, scoring 9 runs in he first two innings chasing Mudhens’ starting pitcher Bob Gibson. The Owls could only manage 4 runs the rest of the game against a stingy Mudhens bullpen lead by Ray Sadecki.

“Boy howdy, I thought we looked real nice after the first few innings. Shoot, 9 runs in 2 innings is a heck of an output… Sadecki just came in and we went flat. We could only get 1 or 2 off him right?” Owls Manager Ed Bailey said in the post game press conference. “We left the door open and they walked right through it… Gotta’ close your barn door or the cows are gonna get out.”

After battling back with runs in every inning except for two and bashing numerous home-runs, the Hens’ eventually closed the gap and won the game by the score of 14-13 on a Jackie Robinson two out, bases loaded triple in the 10th inning. The victory game the Hens’ a 4 game win streak.

Game 2: Delahanty delivers knock-out blow for Owls

With a solid pitching performance from Dizzy Dean, the Hens’ looked to be in control of the game in the 8th inning leading the Owls by the score of 9-3. After a one-out fly-ball error off the bat of Arky Vaughan, the Owls rattled off 4 hits, 2 walks and 5 runs to narrow the deficit to one run.

After Pee-Wee Reese led off the 9th with a walk, Dan Brouthers and Mickey Cochrane followed with a single and walk before Ed Delahanty approached the plate with 2 outs, the bases loaded and a big opportunity. After plating the tying and go-ahead runs with a clutch single, Delahanty felt like he may have found a spot. “It’s just nice to have a chance to play and show what I can do,” he said afterward. “I felt like the invisible man during a lot of these drafts.”

“Big Ed really came through for us right there. Those two runs gave us a little bit of momentum going into their half of the 9th… I was starting to have flash-backs to game one… That was a hell of a win to get,” Bailey said.

Fergie Jenkins blanked the Hens’ in the 9th to earn his first save and preserve the Owls victory, 10-9.

Game 3: Glavine masterful through 7.2 for Owls win
A true pitcher’s duel between Tom Glavine of the Owls and Harry Brecheen of the Hens’ tilts toward Glavine in the ninth as the owls score 4 insurance runs to lock in the win by the score of 10-5 for their starting pitcher. Allowing 3 earned runs in his 7.2 innings, Glavine gave the Owls just what they needed in the pivotal rubber match between these two National League powers. “That one was a heck of a lot closer than the final score indicates. Those 4 insurance runs we got for Tommy in the 9th were really big… REALLY BIG,” said Bailey.

“After the numbers this Hens’ team put up against a real good Fleas team, we had to really stay on our game plan tonight and I’m real happy with how everyone did their part. It will be nice to get home and see what they do there,” Bailey said. “A home team has not won a series yet, so hopefully we can start off on the right foot at home.”

Owls return to Merrimack

The Owls now return to Merrimack to start the home portion of their schedule when the Westport Fleas come to town in two weeks to play a three game set at Brisson Field. At 2-1, the Owls now have an identical winning percentage (66.67%) to the Mudhens, who finished up the first half of their HBL season with a 4-2 mark. The conclusion of the Owls-Fleas series will mark the half-way point in the season for the National League.

McCall – It’s a little early to start talking about history, but after the McCall Mudhens 3 game drubbing of the Fleas last week in Westport there certainly is a buzz starting to hum around the streets of McCall these days. The local coffee shop has a sign stating “This is our year”, the dry cleaner has a “We Believe” sign flying above the cash register, and the city council building is getting into the act with a “Our team, our year” sign as you walk into the grand doorway.

Mudhens fans are as optimistic as ever for good reason, their team destroyed Fleas pitching for a team average of .445, with 11 home runs, 15 doubles and an unprecedented .516 on-base percentage in the three games. Six players in the Hens’ starting lineup (a national league team) have more than 10 total bases in three games and Hank Aaron absolutely blew up for 20 in the series. On paper their 11 home runs are a bit of a surprise, but for a franchise that has the record for most homers by a team with 36, the Hens’ have proven that they know how to hit the ball out of the park and are now on pace to destroy their previous mark by 8.

For the last remaining team that has not won a major title, the Mudhens dugout is nothing but business. “They are just doing what they do and letting the media do the talking,” ASB Network personality Joe Gordon said. “If I am them I try to drown out all the talk and keep playing ball! They have the team to get the job done, they just need to keep the wheels rolling.”

“I think they look real good. Real good,” McCall resident Chad Botz said from a local shop. “I just want to see em’ win it. I will follow them anywhere they go till they do!”

Boilers Support McKeon With Extension

Boggstown Boilers

Jack McKeon

Boggstown – In a symbolic gesture, the Boggstown Boilers thumbed their noses at the ASBL office and have agreed to an extension of Jack McKeon’s contract.  After the ASBL recommendation that the Boilers handle McKeon’s postgame comments internally, rumors swirled about just how stiff a penalty would be handed down.  While many speculations centered around a self-induced suspension, many others were focused on just how much money McKeon would be fined.  Instead, McKeon inked a 14 month extension to his contract, making him the Boilers manager through the 2010 season and into the first few months of 2011, which likely means he’ll be coaching in the next two ASB Classics.  Specifics of the deal were not disclosed, but it is reported that there are many incentives in McKeon’s new deal.  The Boilers’ management issued the following statement:

“We are proud to announce today that we have locked up, in our opinion, the best manager in baseball.  We have been working on a deal since the close of the KCBL, and we finally reached terms today.  As an organization, we do not feel that Jack’s actions the other night warrant any kind of disciplinary action.  He’s brought us three major championships in his short time with us, so we’re confident he knows what he’s doing.  These aren’t high school kids he’s dealing with, they’re professional athletes, and they responded the way we expected them to, with fire and professionalism.  That’s what Jack brings to this team, and that’s one of the reasons we want to keep him around.”

McKeon continued his unofficial standoff with the press, and was not able to be reached for comment regarding the new deal.

Murphy Singing A New Tune For Owls

Merrimack – A hand made sign scratched out on notebook paper with a green sharpie stating “Momma said there’d be days like this” hangs with fresh masking tape in the locker of lifetime Merrimack Owl Dale Murphy as he sits in the locker room taping up his bat before taking batting practice. The song lyrics from Sam Cooke have apparently taken special meaning for Murphy after a stellar start to a career in 2003 which earned him the team MVP has eroded into the most strike-out prone player in ASB history, racking up 19 K’s in his last two 12 game seasons.

“In the off season I was driving with my wife and kids down to the lake for some R&R and the song came on the radio… I looked out the window and something just seemed to click… I have a great family and a great team to play for… Why all the pressure? I know that in the game of baseball I am going to have good days and bad ones. I let last year snowball out of control mentally… I let the strikeouts take a toll on what I did in every at-bat. I was trying too hard and not letting the last at-bat be in the past. It really dictated my aggressiveness.”

Since he busted onto the scene in the All-Star Baseball League with the Owls six years ago as a newly minted lifetime player Murphy has always been prone to the strikeout, but with an on-base-percentage that perennially hovered around .500 there was little made of the fact. A horrible start to the season and a .369 OBP in this years KCBL rocked Murphy to the core.

“I knew that I was going to be a big part of that lineup and if I did my job we would be a pretty darn good team. I take full responsibility on not getting the job done. I put Ed (Bailey) and the rest of the organization in a tough spot. I didn’t get the job done.”

A New Hope

“I have seen Murph dominate the league. I think he could be the BEST player in ANY league he plays in,” fellow life-timer and new workout partner Ron Santo yells from across the locker room. “It smells like YOU just dominated the toilet,” Murphy shoots back with a playful smile… Santo laughs and heads out to the field.

In a ROCKY style training facility just outside Schaumburg, IL, Santo and Murphy have been attacking their workouts with a gorilla style fitness regiment. “Ron has been great. He has helped me regain that spark I had when I first started and got me back to feeling the strike-zone and looking for my pitch… Ron is intense, but loves this game more than ANYONE I have ever been around and has always had a great feel for the zone.”

With the potential cleanup spot in the lineup looming, Murphy will again be leaned on for big production in an Owls lineup with very little power and a lot of potential. When asked if he has any song lyrics that he hopes to sing at the end of the season, Murphy raps “Don’t call it a comeback,” as he blasts a 450 foot bomb into the left field bleachers at Brisson Field during batting practice.

Action Expected On McKeon This Week

Fogelberg – The ASBL announced yesterday that they will take no disciplinary action on Boggstown Boilers manager Jack McKeon after his post-game tirade last week in Fogelberg. They instead encouraged the Boilers organization to decide any disciplinary action for McKeon on their own accord.

Posted in Holiday Baseball League, Merrimack Owls | 1 Comment

Not All Glitz And Glamor For Stars

Fogelberg – Being the only single season player that is not a life-timer carries a lot of pressure and responsibility. Jimmy Foxx, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Cochrane, and Ralph Kiner have a heavy load to carry as they prepare to anchor their prospective lineups during the Holiday Baseball League.

Many of the statistically best players of all time have crumbled under the pressure of trying to be the offensive catalyst for a lineup. Sometimes this creates a love/hate relationship with fans. “A guy has to have that special something. They have to have MOJO to go up there and get the job done every time,” Joe Gordon said during the HBL draft broadcast. “Look at the all-time leaders. Who is leading in almost every major category? The lifetime players. The ‘big-time’ single-season guys are supposed to kick-butt every season and the fans get real excited to have them, but they are seldom the guys who do the ACTUAL heavy-lifting in the lineup. People forget that this is a team game and that you have to have stable players throughout your lineup.”

McKeon Tirade Sparks Boilers

Boggstown Boilers

Jack McKeon

Fogelberg – If Jack McKeon’s post game press conference after Game 2 was any indication of what he delivered to his squad after the game, then it will be interesting to see what’s left of the visitors’ locker room in Macintosh Stadium.  McKeon has never been one to pussyfoot around a situation, and he sure didn’t start Friday night after the Boilers blew a big lead in the 9th by committing two errors and allowing 10 unearned runs, spoiling a brilliant performance by veteran Charlie Hough.

“This is a ****ing God**** joke.  These guys are have to be ****ing kidding me.  Seriously, is this some ****ing prank that Zim put them up to?!”  McKeon then singled out beat columnist Tim Baffa for laughing at the comment.  “I’m glad you find it funny, I really do.  It’s not your ass on the line out there every night.  You clearly don’t give a sh*t how the world perceives yourself, but I sure as **** do! You think I wanted these ass***** on my squad?!  I told them there’s one reason and one reason only they were in this draft, and that’s because they stink.  I mean, they really stink.  15 unearned runs in two games!  Charlie threw his ass off tonight and didn’t get sh*t for it.  He’s a winner, he’s shown that.  He’s proven to me he can be a Boiler, these other clowns haven’t.  And until they do, they better cover their a**es, because nobody is safe right now.  Go write your sh***y story about whatever it is you ****ing write about, but I’ve got to go find some guys that want to play baseball.  If I have to play with two outfielders and three infielders, then I will.   ****.”

McKeon’s message, vulgar by some standards, was apparently received by his team.  The defending champion Boilers responded in the rubber match with a flawless game defensively, outscoring the Falcons 12-6.  Paul Splitorff spelled Jim Rooker in the 6th and went the final four innings without giving up a run to earn the win.  McKeon skipped the post-game presser and had the team on the bus back to Boggstown immediately following Game 3.

McKeon’s post game antics overshadowed one of the major headlines going into the series, a marquee matchup in Game 1 between Robin Roberts and Johnny Podres.  It was a pitcher’s duel all the way, but Roberts got the better of Podres, only allowing 3 earned runs in 8 innings to get the win.  Jack Banta came on in the ninth to pick up the save.
